Mural celebrates Denton community

Primary school children in Haughton Green have helped to design a mural to celebrate their local community. The mural was commissioned and created by Irwell Valley Homes.

Pupils at Manor Green Academy and Corrie Primary School were invited to draw a picture or write a poem to describe what their home means to them. We were blown away by the standard of the entries and picking a winner was extremely difficult. However, a winner and a runner up from each school were chosen and their creations have been printed onto the mural which can be seen on Wordsworth Road where we are building 18 new affordable homes. The new development, which will be completed in May next year, will offer a mix of semi-detached and mews style homes that will be available to rent, or to buy on a shared ownership basis.

Sasha Deepwell, Chief Executive of Irwell Valley Homes, said: “Haughton Green is such a vibrant community and we feel incredibly privileged to be part of it. It was so inspiring reading the children’s poems and reading what their home means to them. The pictures were incredible, and it was very difficult to pick the winners – but overall the winning pictures and poems were a fitting tribute to such a fantastic community.

She went on to say:  ‘With such a thriving community it’s no surprise that people want to stay in the local area, sadly the lack of affordable new homes means that people have to move out of the area, or stay in a home that is not suitable for their needs. We are delighted to be building new homes in Haughton Green, giving local people access to a home they can afford within their community. These new homes are part of our wider development programme that will see us develop over 1000 affordable new homes over the next five years, helping to meet the growing housing need across our region.

The winner from each school received family tickets to the Sea Life Centre in Manchester and the runners up received a £20 shopping voucher which were presented to them in their school assemblies.

Sharon Palfreyman Art Coordinator at Corrie Primary School said “All of our pupils enjoyed the challenge of creating art and poetry to represent what home means to them. Emily and Sasha were delighted and proud to be chosen as winner and runner-up."

Debra Warren, Principal at Manor Green Academy said “I am so proud of both Josh and Mia. Their poems truly reflect our academy value of Care and showcase the dedication of the staff here at Manor Green to developing the talents of our children.  We are proud to be part of the community of Haughton Green and to work with our local partners to support wider developments which will bring further improvement to the area.”
