Trafford Assist - support with living costs in an emergency

Trafford Assist, run by Trafford Council, supports residents in short-term financial difficulties. Applications are discretionary and there to help meet one-off needs rather than on-going expenses.  

 

They may be able to help meet essential needs in an emergency or because of a disaster covering food, energy, essential furniture or white goods and essential travel costs – for example to attend a funeral or hospital appointment.

Citizens Advice

The Irwell Valley Foundation funds Citizens Advice sessions at the Sale West community centre every Thursday between 10am and 12pm.

Come along for expert help to manage your money, increase your income and deal with debt.

They know that everyone’s circumstances are different, so will listen to you and tailor support to suit your needs.

Support with food and other essentials

The Bread-and-Butter Thing is a social supermarket which offers members discounted groceries to help their income go further.

A typical order costs £7.50 and for that you receive a bag of fridge goods, a bag of cupboard goods and a bag of fresh fruit and vegetables.

They visit Sale West each Monday afternoon. To join as a member text 07860 063304 with your full name, postcode and ‘Sale West hub’.

Sale Community Support Fund – managed by Our Sale West – can also help with food vouchers, parcels and access to the FoodShare grocery scheme. Contact them on 0161 973 3778 for more information.

Healthy Start Card. If you’re on certain benefits and are pregnant or have a child under four, you’re eligible for a Healthy Start Card.

Receive £8.50 a week for children aged 0 to 1 and £4.25 a week for those aged 1 to 4. The card can be spent in some UK stores on fruit, vegetables, formula, and milk, and you also qualify for free vitamins. Cards are topped up every four weeks.

Strictly Lunch Club

Our Sunshine Cafe within the Sale West community centre hosts Strictly Lunch every Tuesday and Thursday for older members of the community.

Guests can enjoy a chat and some company over a home-cooked two-course meal and a drink for just £2.50.
