This year Irwell Valley Homes celebrates its 50th anniversary – marking five decades of enabling people to live well in their homes and communities across Greater Manchester.
The 9th of May 1973 is the official date we were formed, starting out with a handful of homes in Salford. Now, almost exactly 50 years on, we’re marking this special occasion in Haughton Green with the launch of a new mental health garden outside our Oasis Community Resource Centre in Tatton Road.
With plants, flowers, and features which appeal to the different senses, the new garden is designed to be a space for quiet time and reflection close to nature. It will include a seating area dedicated to one of our long-standing colleagues, estates officer Steve Shaw, who worked on the Haughton Green estate for many years before he sadly died last year.
Join us on Thursday 11th May at 12.30pm as we cut the ribbon and officially unveil this new community space and celebrate our golden anniversary with us with a cup of tea and slice of cake.
The launch is part of a Wellbeing Day we’ve organised for the community, with a host of other attractions including:
- Information and advice stalls
- Raffle and refreshments
- A two-mile ‘Well-being Walk’ led by a local walking group along the Haughton Green Heritage Trail.
We hope you can make it along on 11th May and we’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Huge thanks to our building partners John Southworth
The new garden wouldn’t have been possible without the fantastic efforts of one our construction contractors John Southworth, who gave their time, expertise and materials to transform the space.
The firm, who in the last year have completed new affordable homes for us on Heanor Avenue and Denbigh Road, said they were delighted to be involved and giving something back to the local area.
Steve Brown, managing director at John Southworth, said: “The garden project fits perfectly within our company’s goals to make a real difference within the community and leave a positive impact in the area.”
