What is tenancy fraud?
The UK is experiencing a housing crisis, with around 1.3 million households on the waiting list for access to social housing. Tenancy Fraud can occur when a person obtains or uses a social housing tenancy dishonestly. Tenancy fraud can be: Application Fraud- This could be through using false or dishonest information in a housing application, right to buy application or when making an application to succeed a tenancy. Unlawful subletting- when a customer is renting out the entirety of their social home and not using the address as their principal home. Keyselling- Selling the keys to a property in exchange for money. Abandonment- Abandoning a property without terminating the tenancy.
IVH take tenancy fraud seriously and will take legal action against those committing it. Tenancy Fraud is illegal and Housing providers and local authorities can take legal action which can result in:
• Repossession of a property.
• The loss of future rights to social housing.
• Imprisonment for up to ten years.
• Recovery of financial loss.
• Recovery of profits made as a result of fraud.
