Starts at Home Day 2022 - Dylan's story

When Dylan moved into Greenbank following the breakdown of the relationship with his foster mum, he was nervous about it would be like and anxious about meeting new people.

But with the support of his key worker, he settled in, made friends, learned new skills in things like housekeeping, budgeting and healthy relationships, and is now looking for work and a home of his own.

He’s also re-built his relationship with his foster mum - learning how to better deal with his emotions and build his self-esteem.

“My keyworker encouraged me to talk to her if I was feeling low and said I should come and see her anytime, that it was important to discuss my emotions and not bottle them up,” he says.

“She helped me to contact my foster mum and say sorry for the arguments – I have a much better relationship with her now, I know she cares about me.”

As we celebrate #StartsAtHome Day, we’re recognising the many ways supported housing impacts on people’s lives – often at the toughest of times.

"Because of the things I’ve learned at Greenbank and how the staff have supported me, I now feel ready to work; ready to move on and get my own place.”
