Starts at Home Day 2022 - Kath's story

When Kath moved to our supported housing scheme in Wythenshawe for people with dementia, both she and her sons were sceptical about the future.

After a difficult two years following the sudden death of her husband and the Covid pandemic, Kath’s condition had deteriorated, and she’d started to retreat into herself. The strain of caring also started to take its toll on her two sons and their relationship.

But moving to Shore Green was a life-changing decision for them all.

Kath, who has Alzheimer’s Disease and vascular dementia, has flourished with the support and opportunities for social interaction that Shore Green offers.

She’s maintained her independence – able to make herself a drink and snack, sharing her choices at mealtimes and managing her own personal care – and come out of herself once again, enjoying activities like the craft and reminiscence group and musical therapy sessions.

Her family is delighted at the difference in her, and so pleased to spend time with their mum again as her sons, rather than her carers.

This #StartsAtHome Day we’re proud to celebrate the difference places like Shore Green make to people when it really matters most.

"Moving to Shore Green has made a life-changing difference to the whole family.”
