National Apprenticeship Week – Callum’s Story

It’s National Apprenticeship Week – the perfect opportunity to celebrate the fantastic contribution apprentices make to Irwell Valley Homes (IVH)!

First in the spotlight is Callum Shaw, who completed his Electrical NVQ Apprenticeship last December and is now continuing to work with us as a qualified electrician.

Callum initially became interested in this line of work following his Dad’s advice and studied at college before taking on his apprenticeship.

He said the mix of practical ‘on the job’ skills and theory-based college work was a great way to learn.

“I found working with various electricians at IVH throughout my course to be really beneficial alongside my work at college," he said. "Seeing how other electricians worked alongside the theory really helped me build on my own working style.”

Callum is delighted to have passed his apprenticeship. He’s relishing the new challenge and looking forward to continuing his career at Irwell Valley Homes, particularly continuing his work with customers – something he’s also enjoyed over the past four years.

“I’m really excited to be my best self in my new role,” Callum said.

“I think there are a lot more responsibilities, planning, organising, and ordering which I haven’t done before that I’m getting to grips with. I’m ready to take on this new challenge and I’m really looking forward to developing my skills as an electrician at Irwell Valley Homes.”

If there was one piece of advice, he would give to someone who is considering an apprenticeship, he said: “Don’t doubt yourself, don’t overthink things, believe in yourself and everything will work out.”

On behalf of everyone at Irwell Valley Homes, we’d like to wish Callum the best of luck in his role and career here. Congratulations Callum, it’s great to have you on board!
