With the warm and sunny weather continuing and likely to stay for most of this month, we wanted to get in touch with a reminder of some important fire safety advice. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service dealt with two fires on balconies last weekend and are urging residents across the region to enjoy the nice weather safely by following the guidance below.
In warmer weather it’s particularly important to remember to:
- Keep fire doors closed - don’t be tempted to prop them open. They provide vital protection in the event of a fire and are there to keep you safe. If you see a fire door wedged open in your building, please close it immediately.
- Keep barbecues, fire pits, chimineas and outside heaters off balconies - these should never be used.
- Dispose of cigarettes in an ashtray - never throw them off balconies as they can start a fire on the balcony below and ensure they're properly extinguished to avoid dry grass catching fire.
- When barbecuing also remember:
- Stay with it at all times - never leave it unattended
- Keep children, pets and garden games away from it
- Keep a bucket of water or hose pipe nearby in case of emergencies
- Use only enough charcoal to cover the base of the barbecue to a depth of about 50mm/2inches
- Dispose of ashes safely - never put ashes straight into a dustbin/wheelie bin; they could melt the plastic and cause a fire.
- Keep glass bottles off the lawn - the glass can magnify the heat from the sun and ignite a fire on the dry grass.
- Make sure bins are properly stored and kept at least 6 metres away from your home, fencing and sheds.
Below are some simple steps you can take to prevent a fire from happening – keeping you and your loved ones safe
